Nagarhole Birding Expedition – Western Ghats Endemic Bird Photography Tour 🦜🌿

The Nagarhole Birding Expedition is a premium South India bird photography and birdwatching tour set in the heart of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot 🌍🌳. Also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, Nagarhole forms part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is one of India’s richest forest ecosystems.

While Nagarhole is globally famous for its tigers and elephants 🐅🐘, it is equally extraordinary for birders. With over 270+ recorded bird species, this expedition focuses on Western Ghats endemics, forest specialists, raptors, and riverine birds.

Key bird highlights include:

  • 🦜 Malabar Trogon

  • 🦜 Malabar Grey Hornbill

  • 🦜 White-bellied Treepie

  • 🦜 Nilgiri Wood Pigeon

  • 🦜 Black Baza

  • 🦜 Crested Serpent Eagle

  • 🦜 Heart-spotted Woodpecker

  • 🦜 Indian Pitta (seasonal)

The mix of moist deciduous forest, bamboo groves, riverbanks along the Kabini backwaters, and open meadows provides varied habitats within a compact region — ideal for concentrated birding sessions 📸.

Early morning forest walks, jeep safaris with a birding focus, and riverside sessions allow excellent photographic angles, soft lighting, and active bird movement. The relative openness of parts of Nagarhole improves sightlines compared to dense rainforest environments.

Because the park also supports mammals like leopard, dhole, gaur, and elephants, birders often enjoy bonus wildlife encounters 🐾.

Nagarhole’s well-managed infrastructure, comfortable eco-lodges, and easy access from Mysuru and Bengaluru make it an ideal destination for international birders visiting South India.
